INTERNACIÓN CONJUNTA
Within the framework of the implementation of National Law No. 25,929 on Respectful Childbirth, our institution implements joint hospitalization, provided the clinical condition of the newborn and the mother permits it. This modality focuses its attention on the family, promoting the rights of both the mother and the newborn. Joint hospitalization seeks to adapt the healthcare team’s practices to the family’s timeframe in order to avoid interfering with the natural development of the bond. It promotes early contact and the development of a proper attachment bond in the new family. It contributes to the gradual understanding and recognition of the newborn’s needs. It creates a space for education, health, breastfeeding promotion, and parenting guidelines.
Your admission to the Hospital: After completing the administrative procedures for admission, the mother and her companion are escorted to the pre-delivery area on the 5th floor. There, they will be placed in a room where medical procedures prior to labor will be performed. Afterward, the team of professionals, along with the mother and her companion, will proceed to the delivery room or operating room, depending on each individual case.
A professional from the Neonatology team will be present to receive the newborn, along with the team of professionals involved in the birth. After the birth:
Once the birth has taken place: After delivery or cesarean section, the mother, newborn, and her companion will be transferred together to a room on the floor, if both are medically able. There, the mother and newborn will be cared for by the healthcare team comprised of Neonatology and Obstetrics professionals, a nurse, and a child care specialist. The child care team’s role is to promote, protect, and support the initiation and establishment of breastfeeding and provide general guidelines for raising the newborn. During hospitalization: In compliance with National Law No. 25,929 on Respectful Childbirth, in its articles 2, paragraph h, and 3, paragraph a, our institution implements joint hospitalization when the clinical condition of the newborn and the mother permits it. This approach focuses on the family without unnecessary interference or separation, with interventions by the health team tailored to the needs of each particular case, without rigid schedules, and promoting care focused on the rights of the mother and newborn.
Newborn medical examinations are performed in the newborn’s room with the family. For any pathologies detected during hospitalization, specialist consultations may be provided if necessary. Newborns receive the Hepatitis B and BCG vaccines during hospitalization according to the official vaccination schedule of the National Ministry of Health. Furthermore, in compliance with the regulatory framework of the Neonatal Screening Program under the Ministry of Health of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, as provided for in Law No. 1808 of the Buenos Aires City Government (GCA), all newborns undergo mandatory neonatal screening. This screening aims to detect six congenital metabolic disorders early before they manifest symptoms, allowing for timely diagnosis and treatment. These are: hypothyroidism, galactosemia, biotinidase deficiency, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, cystic fibrosis, and phenylketonuria. Pulse Oximetry tests are also performed to rule out congenital heart disease after 24 hours of life, the red reflex to rule out ocular pathologies in the newborn such as cataracts, retinoblastoma, among others, and the Otoacoustic Emissions hearing test, on an outpatient basis with the speech therapy team at our neonatal center, within the first month of life.
COMPLEMENTARY MATERNAL STUDIES
Clinical laboratories, specialized and infectious disease studies, diagnostic imaging, and fetal monitoring are some of the tests that make up the proper follow-up of a pregnancy. We have the human and technological resources that support the Sanatorium’s renowned diagnostic and therapeutic history and enable us to address any obstetric contingency.
HIGH-RISK PREGNANCIES
The Otamendi Sanatorium is a leading institution for the care of pregnancies with increased risk and the possibility of premature birth, within a framework of exceptional contingency resolution capabilities. This includes cases of extremely premature births. The availability of a permanent Hemotherapy and Hemostasis Service, coupled with the possibility of accessing interconsultants from all specialties, are determining factors in these types of situations.
PRENATAL INTERVIEW
It is important to mention that the Sanatorium offers interested families a prenatal medical interview. This interview is designed to provide advice on baby care from the first days of life, inform them about the procedures and routines to be performed during their hospitalization with their baby, answer questions, and provide information on the implementation of safe birth practices in our Sanatorium.
