Taking care of your urological health: Check your prostate

What is the prostate?

The prostate is a gland located below the bladder and surrounds the urethra. Its main function is to produce a fluid that mixes with sperm to form semen. This fluid is essential for male fertility. This gland plays a vital role in male sexual and reproductive function, as it aids in ejaculation and sperm motility. It also acts as a protective barrier against urinary tract infections.

Why does it become inflamed?

Inflammation of the prostate, known as prostatitis, can be caused by infections, injuries, or unknown factors. It is important to identify the underlying cause for effective treatment.

What are the symptoms and treatment?

Symptoms of prostate problems may include difficulty urinating, frequent urination, pain when urinating, blood in the urine or semen, and discomfort in the pelvis or lower back. Treatment varies depending on the condition:

Prostatitis: May require antibiotics if caused by infection, along with prostate anti-inflammatories (saw palmetto, diclofenac, etc.).

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH): Treatment may include medications to reduce symptoms or surgical procedures, endoscopic surgery, green laser, holmium laser, Rezum, or even conventional or laparoscopic surgery.

Prostate cancer: Treatment depends on the stage, but may include surgery, radiation therapy, hormone therapy, or active surveillance.

Prostate symptoms to watch out for

Prostate problems can cause discomfort in the lower abdomen, the area between the scrotum and the anus (perineum), or the lower back. You may also experience pain when urinating or during ejaculation. In addition, you may have difficulty urinating, a weak stream, and increased nighttime urination.
