Cesarean section: a carefully considered option for your delivery

A cesarean section is a surgical procedure that involves removing the baby through an incision in the abdomen and uterus instead of a vaginal delivery. This procedure is reserved for situations where the health of the mother or baby is at risk or when vaginal delivery is not safe or advisable.

It is important to note that a cesarean section should not be considered a matter of convenience or personal preference. Instead, it is used in specific circumstances, such as:

Medical emergencies: When an emergency arises during delivery that puts the life of the mother or baby at risk, a cesarean section may be the safest and quickest option.

Dystocia during labor: If there is a lack of progression or descent of the presentation (the baby's head) during labor, a cesarean section should be performed.

Previous health problems: In cases of obstetric history that contraindicate vaginal delivery, such as placenta previa or previous uterine scars, where the indication may be agreed upon if there is only one previous cesarean section, but it is an absolute indication if there is more than one cesarean section or uterine surgeries that have compromised the uterine cavity, a cesarean section is planned.

Abnormal positions of the baby: If the baby is in a position that does not facilitate a safe delivery, such as breech or transverse presentation, a cesarean section is the appropriate indication.

However, it is important to remember that cesarean delivery carries risks and a longer recovery time compared to vaginal delivery. We always consider the least invasive and safest option for you and your baby. Therefore, it is essential to discuss your concerns and preferences with your healthcare team during pregnancy and labor.

At the Obstetrics and Neonatology Center at Medical Center we understand that cesarean sections are a valuable tool in obstetrics, but they should only be performed under medical supervision, with full explanation to the patient, mutual agreement on the surgical procedure, and only when medically necessary to ensure the health and safety of the mother and/or her baby. Trust your medical team to make informed and careful decisions about your delivery. For more information, please do not hesitate to request an appointment with us. We look forward to seeing you.
