A nipple crack, also known as a nipple fissure, refers to a break in the skin of the nipple, which can occur during breastfeeding. Causes may include poor breastfeeding technique, too strong suction by the baby, dry and cracked skin, the presence of bacteria on the nipple, or an infection.
Symptoms may include nipple pain, burning sensation, redness, bleeding, and nipple crusting. It is important to treat this condition to avoid infection and prevent interruption of breastfeeding.
Treatment may include correcting breastfeeding technique, applying moisturizer, using a nursing pad to prevent friction, and in some cases, taking pain relievers. Cracked nipples can be soothed with purified lanolin or hydrogel bandages to retain moisture. If the nipple becomes infected, topical antibiotics may help.
If the nipple crack does not improve or if there are signs of infection, you can visit our Breast Diagnostic Center.
