Allergies are reactions of the immune system to substances that are generally harmless to most people. These substances, known as allergens, can include pollen, dust mites, animal hair, certain foods, or insect bites. When an allergic person comes into contact with an allergen, their immune system overreacts, causing symptoms such as sneezing, itching, rashes, nasal congestion, or, in severe cases, difficulty breathing or anaphylaxis. Allergies can vary in severity and can be seasonal or permanent, depending on the substance that causes them. Treatment often involves avoiding allergens, medications to relieve symptoms, and, in some cases, immunotherapy.
