It is a test used to evaluate the function of the salivary glands.
In this test, the patient is given a small amount of a radioactive substance called technetium-99m-pertechnetate, and then both sequential dynamic and static images are taken to obtain curves for evaluating the uptake and secretion of the radiolabeled saliva.
It is useful in cases of dry mouth or xerostomia, and for detecting obstructions or inflammation in the salivary glands. It can also be used to diagnose autoimmune diseases that affect the salivary glands, such as Sjögren's syndrome.
The study takes approximately 30 minutes to complete.
