The thyroid and mediastinum scintigraphy with iodine-131 (131I) is a nuclear medicine test used to evaluate the activity and function of the thyroid gland and detect possible alterations in its structure and/or function.
In this test, a small amount of iodine-131 is administered to the patient orally. This material is absorbed by the thyroid gland and emits gamma radiation, which allows images to be obtained.
