A renal scintigram is a technique used to evaluate the morphology and function of the kidneys. In this type of scintigram, a radiopharmaceutical called technetium-99m-DMSA is administered intravenously, which selectively binds to the cells of the renal parenchyma.

Once the radiopharmaceutical has been distributed throughout the body and taken up by the kidneys, static images are taken at different angles.

Separate percentage uptake involves measuring the uptake of each kidney independently. This is achieved by placing a region of interest (ROI) over each kidney and measuring the amount of radioactivity in each.

The information obtained from these images can help detect the presence of kidney lesions or areas of dysfunctional kidney tissue.

The images are taken approximately 4 hours after the injection.
