The esophagogastroduodenal series is an imaging study that uses X-rays to assess the anatomy and motility of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum, as well as any associated pathology, through the ingestion of a barium contrast material and an effervescent substance.
During the exam, the patient will lie down on the table, and the doctor will instruct them on how to drink the barium contrast material and an effervescent substance. They will be asked to move into different positions while X-rays are taken at different points during the procedure. The study will then be analyzed and reported on by the diagnostic imaging specialist.
