The endoscopic capsule with its miniature video cameras allows us to perform a complete examination of the small intestine and colon in a minimally invasive and outpatient manner.
It is swallowed with a simple sip of water and, as it travels through the digestive tract, propelled naturally by intestinal movements, it captures and transmits a large number of high-quality images to sensors attached to the abdomen. These images are stored in a recorder carried by the patient for later evaluation.
Its main indications include: the study of gastrointestinal bleeding of unknown origin, iron deficiency anemia, inflammatory bowel disease, early diagnosis of small intestine tumors, investigation of complications of celiac disease, diagnosis and monitoring of intestinal polyposis, malabsorption syndromes, better evaluation of abnormal small intestine images obtained by other means, and completion of endoscopic evaluation of the colon when conventional endoscopy fails.
